THE WINE TOUR
Location
Montefalco
Duration
8
Montefalco is located in the center of Umbria, in the province of Perugia. The village takes its name from the sport of falconry, which was enjoyed by Frederick II of Swabia, who stayed here in the 13th century. Montefalco’s bordering towns offer hidden artistic treasures, including historical ruins and frescoes of major importance. The surrounding area is world-famous for a red wine with phenomenal organoleptic properties: Sagrantino.
Sagrantino is produced in the small towns of Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Giano dell’Umbria and Castel Ritaldi, for a total of 660 hectares: very few for a wine that is so well-known around the world. This is proof of how closely Sagrantino is linked to the terroir. Grape growing and winemaking in the Montefalco area date back to Roman times. Sagrantino originated as a festive wine, as a sweet passito and paired with an Umbrian Easter cake. In the past 30 years, however, Sagrantino has been vinified so that it now qualifies as a dry wine.
In 1979, Sagrantino was awarded DOC status and in 1992 it was given DOCG status, two valuable titles that lead to the area’s cultural, social, and economic development. During our tour, we will visit some of the foremost wineries in the area. These include Cantina Bartoloni, Arnaldo Caprai, Di Filippo, and Antonelli.
